To show the impact that Michael Jordan has had on society; alone by 1998 Fortune estimated he increased the American economy by $10 billion. Take the financial element out and focus on what the Jordan sneaker did to the sneaker culture, besides the AF1 there is no comparison. Name another shoe (again besides the AF1) that can come out year after year and still be hottest kick on the market, with people waiting massive lines in 30 degree weather to purchase another pair to add to their collection?

Director Calvan Fowler and many others have known of this phenomenon for years but know one has really taken the time to focus on “Jordan Heads” from the societal level as opposed to the economic perspective. Fowler’s work is sure to be one of the most multi-faceted, in-depth documentaries of 2008 across the board…are you a Jordan Head?

Scheme: How did you get inspired to create a documentary strictly about Jordan’s?

Calvan Fowler: Being a fan of sneakers in general, but at the same time seeing how the Jordan brand has stepped up the sneaker design as well as comfort level. The fact that they look good and feel good on your feet, in addition to the fact that I don’t work for Jordan so I’m not trying to boast his sales or anything like that. Also the fact that this man accomplished so much on the court it’s kind of like owning a piece of him in your own mind. Having J’s is like having that car that gets all the ladies.

Scheme: When did you first fall in love with sneakers in general?

Calvan Fowler: The first Airmax’s they were red and gray.

Scheme: Could you afford them at the time?

Calvan Fowler: I went and got a job at the age of 13, I think and I had to find one because I was so young they wouldn’t let me get a job because I didn’t have work papers and I was to young to get work papers. So my mom helped me find a job and I finally got them and they were $75 when they came out, those were really expensive back then. $75 for some damn sneakers is nuts but they were the best. I wore them until the bubbles burst. Then I tried to recreate them by penning on them and this is way before this whole thing of recreating sneakers and doing art on them and stuff like that occurred. So, after having them at the age of 13 and rockin them for two or three years, I was already in the process of trying to reinvent them.

Scheme: Speaking on the price of sneakers they range from $150-$300, what do you say to the people who say that’s ridiculous to spend $200 on a pair of sneakers, it’s a pair of sneakers?

Calvan Fowler: To each his own, everyone’s got his/her own vice and for some people its sneakers. I haven’t been pushed to that point, I’ve become a Jordan Head while doing this film. You know when you’re doing a role for a film and you have to do research? I’m spending crazy money just buying sneakers and its like, oh my gosh, it’s really expensive to be a Jordan head, I don’t know how they do it.

Scheme: What’s your collection like right now?

Calvan Fowler: I’ve acquired maybe seven pairs now and I would like to get more but I just can’t afford it, I have a film to do (laughs).

Scheme: What are you’re favorite pair of J’s?

Calvan Fowler: The 3’s, 6’s and 11’s.

Scheme: Why?

Calvan Fowler: It’s the look, they look amazing to me. The 3’s for the simplicity, the 6’s for the two holes in the tongue and how it has that high ankle support and the 11’s for the patent leather its obvious.

Scheme: In your film do you touch discuss when the whole Jordan and Nike brand blew up and people who couldn’t afford them resorted to violence because they wanted them that bad?

Calvan Fowler: There is talk of that (laughs), but I’m not going to divulge too much of that. There is talk of, and you will see something happen (laughs). That was really weird that was one of the topics and to actually witness something, was like what the hell, and without any weapons mind you.

Scheme: What featured guests do you have without giving out everybody?

Calvan Fowler: Let’s keep that a secret.

Scheme: Do you have an idea of when the film will be released?

Calvan Fowler: The goal is to have it released to coincide with the 23’s.

Scheme: When people check the trailer it starts off with Come Chantrel (Co-Director of Just for Kicks) who has this crazy story about getting into and accident with this dude but the only thing he cared about was having blood on his J’s?

Calvan Fowler: Yeah Come has amazing stories and he basically has stories from J’s 1 to 22. He’s well versed on the sneaker game and Jordan’s as well.

Scheme: Without giving too much, what are some of the crazy stories that people have regarding their love for J’s?

Calvan Fowler: I think one kid got jumped for a pair of the Spiz’ikes, but the guy is like 27 years old. So that’s extreme to me to be jumped at the age of 27 but then to go back and fight as well. So people aren’t letting things go to easy.

Scheme: So how are you funding and supporting this film, whose pocket is that coming out of?

Calvan Fowler: American Express (laughs) that’s pretty much it.

Scheme: What do you hope this film does, what is the goal and purpose of this documentary?

Calvan Fowler: The purpose and goal for me is to pretty much flex my creativity and to talk about a subject that is close and dear to me which are sneakers. Also, to shed some light on what goes on in other parts of the United States and hopefully the world, so other people can see that they are not alone in this whole Jordan Head thing.

Scheme: Is directing and creating films something you want to continue to pursue or is this just a isolated project?

Calvan Fowler: This is isolated, I might not do another documentary I have other ideas that I want to put out there.

Scheme: What were you doing and or are still doing before you started this whole project as far as job wise, career wise?

Calvan Fowler: I used to work for Spike Lee back in the day and used to work in numerous films and videos and I was one of his office assistants in dealing with the public and the press and stuff like that and getting his turkey burgers and what not (laughs).

Scheme: Now are you an NBA fan as well?

Calvan Fowler: Yes, to an extent.

Scheme: Who is your squad?

Calvan Fowler: Squad, wow, I’m not to versed on a team of five but my favorites right now would be Shaq, A.I.(Allen Iverson), the ‘Matrix’(Shawn Marion) and Lebron has stepped up his game as well.

Scheme: What do you think mystifies people about Jordan’s and his persona? For me I was a fanatic, I mean if you saw my room you would think I worshipped this guy.

Calvan Fowler: Its funny as a kid, but there are grown men who have this in their homes right now and really collecting hard because they can afford to do it now. I mean if I wasn’t doing other things I’d be buying a whole bunch of J’s as well.

Scheme: Through this film how much has hip hop played a role in the whole sneaker game?

Calvan Fowler: Its huge, no offense, but when Whites and Asians were wearing these sneakers they were called gym shoes, but now when we wear them it was to be dope and fresh. At first people were wearing shoes during the disco era but now we have to be comfortable standing on the corner. Also it’s acceptable to wear clean sneakers if you are of a certain descent, if you’re wearing dirty sneakers you like a bum and we can’t get away with that.
