In the wake of the recent events in Blacksburg, VA I often wonder what we do this for. It puts a lot of things in perspective and people re-evaluate whats really important to them. There are many things to think about but for this issue relating to this awful event at Virginia Tech University all I can think is image. The images that will be shown throughout the next few weeks will be repetitive, redundant, and at times draining. I often hate when things like this occurr because the media feeds off it everyday and they don’t allow time for the people in the actual event to breathe and reflect nor do they themselves. The point I’m trying to make is there is so much negativity in the world its often hard somedays to get up and keep movin because you often wonder why? Why does this happen and what its like to grow up in this generation dealing with these events? This is not to disregard anything that has taken place before us i.e. the enslavement era of the civil rights era, but to deal with everything from Rodney King, to Sean Bell, 9/11, the War, and now this what do these events and images do to a person’s pysche?

I hate to say it but watch how long the media talks about this, how they analyze and re-analyze and debates that have laid dorment resurface. The events that took place at V-Tech can be compared to having a family that is dysfunctional on all levels and people in that family deny the fact that one person has a drug problem, another individual beats his wife, and the other is not a good parent; but no one talks about it until the member with the drug problem has an overdose or the woman that gets beat is paralyzed. When do we become the pro-active country and stopped allowing ourselves to be reactive. The AGYTATORS, John Mannion, Head and Neck Sessions and author Dave Zirin do thisthrough their craft and in this day and time thats all anyone can ask for. Scheme Magazine sends its prayers out to the students, faculty and families of Virginia Tech University and I ask my generation to keep movin!

It is frustrating that we have become a society which acts only in the wake of disaster. It is a shame that the events in VA transpired, but the reality of the matter is people explode when they have nowhere to turn. It’s unfortunate that we will never truly know why this happened but hopefully these schools will begin to reach out to the students to discover what they are truly going through and what lies beneath. Why is it that we would rather sop up the blood that is leaking from the leaves of this dead tree of a society instead of tending to the roots? I’m positive that the shooter had issues for a long time and if people only paid more attention to the plight of others this may not have happened.

My prayers also go out to the students, faculty and families of Virginia Tech University.
